Monroe’s Hoekstra pitches in the CABA

Ben Hoekstra, a senior-to-be at Monroe High School, was a member of the Dow Baseball Club U-16 team that competed recently in the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series in Marietta, Ga.

The tournament ran from July 30 through Aug. 7.

The Dow team posted a 4-0 record in pool play before losing both of its games in the championship round.

Hoekstra, a pitcher, opened the tournament for Dow with a three-hit shutout in a 15-0 win over the East Cobb Bulldogs. He struck out six.

In his only other outing, Hoeskstra threw 42/3 innings in a 13-5 loss to the Rockford Hitmen in the championship round. He was not involved in the decision.

Vipers place third: The Maltby Vipers U-14 Pony baseball team placed third last week at the West Zone Tournament in Fullerton, Calif.

The Vipers posted a 3-2 record in the tournament. Maltby, the Washington state and Northwest Regional champion, finished its season with a 66-6 record.

Members of the team included Brandon Burr, Max Foster, Bryant Robbins, Casey Robinett, Jake Robinett, Thomas Sheets, Zach Stockwell, Brian Wolfe, Nathan Mullins, Jake Hines and Dale Wilson.

The Vipers were coached by John Robinett. The team’s coaches were Jim Foster and Mark Stockwell.

Softball

Ladyhawks third at nationals: The Washington Ladyhawks, a 10-U fastpitch softball team based in the Arlington-Granite Falls area, wrapped up its season with a third-place finish in the Silver Division of the Summer Nationals, held July 29-31 in McMinnville, Ore.

Three Ladyhawks – Alicia Amundson, Jasmine Holman and Veronica Ladines – were named to the all-tournament team. Other members of the team included Jamie Alexander, Rhiannon Alexander, Lynsey Amundson, Kelsey Arndt, Haley Brennan, Mikayla Cole, Jessica Mueller, Nicole Wesala and Breanna White.
