More on Dailey, Fiala

… OK, here’s the scoop.

– Zack Dailey was diagnosed with a concussion from the hit he took Wednesday from Spokane’s Justin Falk. He was released from the hospital this morning and stayed home and rested today. He’ll have to go through the concussion protocol, so he’ll probably be out at least a couple weeks. But given how bad it looked at the time, it’s good news it wasn’t anything worse.

Speaking of the hit, the Tips were under the impression, both at the time of the hit and after looking at replays, that it was clean. The league agreed as it rescinded Falk’s charging major and game misconduct and will not suspend him.

– Ondrej Fiala was traded to Saskatoon in exchange for a conditional third-round bantam pick. Right now it’s for 2009 because Saskatoon currently doesn’t have a third rounder in 2008. But if the Blades acquire a 2008 third rounder down the line, it will be sent to the Tips.

With that one move Everett essentially took care of all it’s roster crowding. The Euro situation is set with forwards Lukas Vartovnik and Vitali Karamnov taking the two spots. The overager situation is also essentially set. The Tips still have four — forwards Dan Gendur and Brennan Sonne, defenseman Dane Crowley and goaltender David Reekie — but Reekie is exempt until he recovers from his bout with mono.

Fiala probably had to be the overager/Euro to go. He’s an excellent player, but his status as both an overager and a Euro, when the Tips had too many quality players in each category, made it difficult to keep him. In Saskatoon he’ll be teamed with another Minnesota Wild prospect, center Colton Gillies, who was Minnesota’s first rounder this year.

And the Tips did pretty well in getting a third rounder in return. It’s hard getting any kind of return for an overager, especially when everyone in the league knows a team is overcrowded.

– In other news, Crowley was back at practice today after missing Wednesday’s game to attend a funeral and will be available for tomorrow’s game against Portland. And backup goaltender Shayne Barrie will be showing off a shiny new set of pads.
