EDMONTON, Alberta — Ethan Moreau scored three goals to help the Edmonton Oilers beat the Phoenix Coyotes 6-3 on Sunday, capping a festive night that featured the retirement of Hall of Famer Glenn Anderson’s No. 9 jersey.
Moreau completed his first career NHL hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final second. Ales Hemsky added two goals, Dustin Penner also scored, and Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves for Edmonton.
With their second straight victory and fourth in five games, the Oilers moved past Minnesota for eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
Keith Yandle, Daniel Carcillo and Peter Mueller scored for Phoenix.
Hemsky, back after missing 10 games because of a concussion, gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead midway through the first period, splitting the defense and freezing Ilya Bryzgalov with a deke. Moreau made it 3-1 on a deflection with a minute left in the first.
Carcillo and Mueller scored in a 2:35 span of the second to tie it, but Penner put the Oilers back in front at 12:01. Hemsky scored his second of the game with 1:37 left in the third, and Moreau added his empty-netter.
Notes: It was Hemsky’s first game since Dec. 28. … Phoenix
captain Shane Doan is just two goals short of becoming the third player in Jets/Coyotes history to have nine consecutive 20-goal seasons. The other two are Keith Tkachuk and Dale Hawerchuk.
