EVERETT — As Mount Vernon coach Tony Wolden said, “better late than never.”
Down to their last chance, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and held the lead in the bottom of the frame, defeating Jackson 3-2 in a 4A District 1 loser-out game Thursday evening at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“We got what we needed when it counted,” Wolden said. “… This team performs better when their back is against the wall. They’ve done a good job of that in do-or-die situations. I’m just proud of the boys, how they came through in the end.”
Zach Dougliss hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and Reilly Olmsted followed that with a sacrifice fly to left field to put Mount Vernon (14-9 overall) ahead for the first time since the second inning.
“It was frustrating offensively, because we had runners in scoring position and weren’t able to score them early in the game,” Wolden said. “We just couldn’t get that clutch hit. And then in the end, when your back’s against the wall, we get a base hit from Zach Dougliss and a sacrifice fly Reilly Olmsted.”
The Bulldogs struck first, with Olmsted scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. But Jackson (14-10) tied the score with an RBI single by Carter Booth in the bottom of the third and took the lead on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The loss ended the Timberwolves’ season. Mount Vernon will face the loser of Thursday night’s district championship game between Snohomish and Cascade in a winner-to-state contest at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Said Wolden: “Our backs will be against the wall on Saturday like they were today.”
