Mountlake Terrace stays alive with win against Marauders

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Like a good television show in the middle of May sweeps, the Mountlake Terrace girls volleyball team left us with a bit of a cliffhanger going into Thursday’s season finale.

The Hawks defeated Mariner 25-15, 25-22, 20-25, 25-13 Tuesday night, leaving both teams battling for the final Wesco South 4A District 1 playoff spot with only one game remaining on the regular-season schedule.

Mariner (3-4 in league, 5-6 overall) could’ve put an end to the drama by defeating the Hawks on Tuesday.

But behind 44 assists from Christine Jenson, and 11 kills and 20 digs from Lael Swanson, the Hawks (3-4, 6-7) kept their postseason hopes alive by bouncing back from a Game 3 loss to win convincingly in the fourth game.

“My girls came back in that fourth game and I knew they could finish it,” Mountlake Terrace head coach Marietta Snyder said.

Meagon Brown added 10 kills and Anna Pendergrast had 20 digs for the Hawks, who will face a tough Shorecrest team at Shorecrest on Thursday.

The Hawks came into the game knowing that one loss would end any chance of reaching the postseason.

“We talked about it. I told my girls we had to play our game, play smart. (Mariner) really brought it on. We stepped up and I’m very proud of them (the Hawks),” Snyder said.
