PEORIA, Ariz. — The Seattle Mariners were blanked by the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, before a crowd of 8,230 on Thursday night at Peoria Stadium.
Seattle was held to just four hits, two from John Andreoli and one each by Guillermo Heredia and Zach Vincej.
San Francisco scored two runs each in the second and seventh innings. Three of the Giants four runs were brought in on doubles from Trevor Brown.
Rob Whalen made his third appearance of the spring and allowed two runs, 0 earned, on four hits and one walk while striking out three in three innings pitched. He was charged with the loss and is now 0-1 in Cactus League play.
Chasen Bradford followed Whalen in relief and tossed a scoreless fourth inning, striking out one. Juan Nicasio worked a clean fifth inning while fanning two.
Edwin Diaz did not allow a baserunner in the sixth and struck out the final batter he faced. Ryan Cook allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in an inning of work. Max Povse tossed the final two frames and walked three while striking out one.
The Mariners (5-8-1) return to Cactus League action Friday against the Giants. Left-hander James Paxton is slated to start for the Mariners against Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzjia.
