AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – For a moment Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners thought they had the makings of trade, but by evening no deal was imminent.
Seattle had offered Brett Tomko and Carlos Guillen to San Diego for third baseman Phil Nevin. Nevin, who batted .303 with 31 home runs and 107 RBI, has two years remaining on his contract and will be paid $1.5 million next year and $2.6 milliion in 2002.
But the Padres kept shopping around, and now are believed to be now close to a deal with Milwaukee that would bring them Jeremy Burnitz and a young infielder.
Seattle also met with Minnesota and Pittsburgh on Wednesday, talking to the Twins about outfielder Matt Lawton. Problem is, Minnesota wants young hitting back – and the Mariners don’t have much to offer.
“It doesn’t look like we’re going to get anything done here,” said GM Pat Gillick, who will leave here late this morning.
