Pitcher Miguel Batista has a stiff back, but he’s expected to make his start Thursday night against the Padres.

Mariners broadcaster Dave Sims left Tuesday for what he might call “a break in the action” although certainly not a break in his busy schedule. Sims will be in Anaheim to call four NCAA Tournament games Thursday and two Saturday for the Westwood One radio network.
