SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners acquired a familiar name Friday in an attempt to solve a crisis that has plagued them for two years.
They signed Mike Myers.
No, it’s not THAT Mike Myers.
It’s even better than Austin Powers or Dr. Evil to the Mariners, who hope they have found their much-needed second left-handed reliever with Myers, a 34-year-old veteran of 609 major league games.
Myers was one of 16 non-roster players the Mariners invited Friday to their major league spring training camp. That list includes Myers and five other left-handed pitchers as the M’s try to come up with another left-hander in the bullpen along with Eddie Guardado.
The Mariners haven’t had that second left-hander since Norm Charlton last pitched for them in 2001.
Myers played the last two years with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and went 0-1 with a 5.70 earned run average in 64 appearances in 2003. Since 1995, he has played with the Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies and the Diamondbacks.
The Mariners also invited left-handed pitchers Craig Anderson, Travis Blackley, Jose Nunez, George Sherrill and Randy Williams, catchers Pat Borders, Luis Oliveros and Rene Rivera, infielders Bucky Jacobsen, Adam Jones, Jose Lopez, Mickey Lopez and A.J. Zapp, and outfielders Shin-Soo Choo and Hiram Bocachica.
Jones, a shortstop, is the Mariners’ first-round pick in the 2003 draft.
Spring training begins Feb. 20, when pitchers and catchers report. Their first workout is Feb. 21.
