PORTLAND, Ore. – Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer and Brian Lawrence allowed one run in six innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 Friday.
Lawrence shuttled between San Diego and Class AAA Portland last year before making his last 15 starts for the Padres. “Now I’m here to start the season, and I hope I stick around,” he said.
Seattle starter Clint Nageotte, a 21-year-old right-hander who played for Class A Wisconsin last year, took the loss, giving up three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in three innings.
Joel Pineiro, who said he’s been awarded the job as the Mariners’ fifth starter, pitched one inning and allowed a run on two hits.
“I’m just dying to get out there, to get the feeling going,” Pineiro said of the regular season.
The Mariners’ only run came in the sixth, when Bret Boone led off with a double and Edgar Martinez drove him in with a single.
San Diego’s Sean Burroughs, who hit .322 for Portland last year and was named Pacific Coast League rookie of the year, had a single and an error at third. He left the game after jamming his thumb.
Ichiro Suzuki had a single in four at-bats for Seattle. He also made a running shoestring catch in the third on a line drive by Pete Incaviglia with the bases loaded.
A sellout crowd of 19,778 turned out to watch the Mariners play their first game in Portland since April 2, 1984.
The same two teams play today at Safeco Field in Seattle, their fourth game against each other in four days.
Infielder Alex Arias, fighting to make the Mariners’ roster, went 2-for-2 with a double and had a nice dig at first.
