M’s catching shuffle
The Seattle Mariners will pose for their team photo this afternoon at Safeco Field, which raises an important question:
What time is the re-take Wednesday …and Thursday … and Friday?
At the rate the Mariners are juggling their roster, any photo taken today could be useless tomorrow.
Nevertheless, when they line up and say “cheese,” the Mariners will include catcher Miguel Ojeda and outfielder Jamal Strong, and not catcher Wiki Gonzalez.
Those three swapped clubhouses Monday when the Mariners called up Ojeda and Strong from the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers and optioned Gonzalez back to Tacoma. Strong replaces Chris Snelling, who injured his left knee last week and will need surgery.
As of Monday, the Mariners had made 28 roster moves in the previous 20 days.
It hasn’t quite left manager Mike Hargrove’s head spinning, although he hasn’t enjoyed giving bad news to someone almost every day.
“It takes something out of you because it’s not a fun thing to tell people they’re being sent out,” Hargrove said. “But it’s as much a part of the game as getting a base hit. You never look forward to it and when it’s over with you hope it doesn’t happen for awhile.”
No position has turned over like the catching.
Ojeda became the seventh catcher to suit up for the Mariners this season. The others are Dan Wilson (season-ending knee injury), Miguel Olivo (traded to the Padres), Pat Borders (released), Rene Rivera (sent back to Tacoma), Yorvit Torrealba (obtained in trade from the Giants), Ojeda (obtained in trade from the Padres) and Gonzalez.
Gonzalez had caught 13 games and was batting .267 when the Mariners sent him down.
“Obviously it’s a bummer for Wiki, but it doesn’t mean we don’t like him,” Hargrove said. “Our catching situation is such that we feel we need to look at Ojeda. We feel like we know pretty much what Wiki can do. With Ojeda and Torrealba, we’re still trying to find out. We think all three of them are major league catchers, but we want to see to what degree.”
Sore sight in right: Scott Spiezio worked on fielding balls in right field Monday afternoon, although it was apparent he won’t be replacing Ichiro Suzuki soon. Or ever.
A reporter asked Hargrove if Suzuki wondered why Spiezio was working in his spot.
“After watching Spiezio out there, I was wondering why he was there,” Hargrove said.
Still, the Mariners are trying to find a place to use Spiezio, whose batting average plunged to .044 after he went 0-for-10 in three starts over the weekend.
“His role is to play a number of positions and we had him out there to get some more work,” Hargrove said.
No tat: Bobby Madritsch wasn’t bashful enough to keep from having his body decorated with 27 tattoos over the years, but there are some things he won’t do.
Going topless for a crowd of about 400 is one of them.
Madritsch had planned to get a tattoo on his back Sunday at the Seattle Tattoo Convention. When he showed up at the booth of a friend who is a tattoo artist, he told Madritsch to come back in 10 minutes.
“When I got back, there were 400 people standing there waiting for me,” Madritsch said. “I’m not taking my shirt off for all those people.”
He planned to get the tattoo after Monday night’s game, at a more private location.
Of note: Mike Morse started at shortstop Monday, a day after Hargrove said Yuniesky Betancourt would get most of the starts there. Hargrove also said the Mariners haven’t decided whether Morse will play left field, where he has fielded balls in afternoon workouts. “It’s not a foregone conclusion, but if we decide to do it, it will probably be another five or six days,” Hargrove said. … Adrian Beltre was the Mariners’ DH Monday “just to get him off his feet for a day,” Hargrove said. … Pitcher Rafael Soriano, will continue his minor league rehab tonight by pitching one inning for the Tacoma Rainiers. He also is scheduled for one inning Thursday and two innings Sunday for the Rainiers.
