M’s top pick Lewis, AquaSox explode in 12-1 rout of Emeralds

EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox scored early and often in their third try of the season against Eugene, with the Frogs cruising to a 12-1 victory over the Emeralds Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The win snapped a two-game losing skid against Eugene for the AquaSox, who had lost four of their previous five contests.

Johmbeyker Morales got the Frogs on the board with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. The AquaSox added to their lead in the third with an RBI groundout by Eric Filia and a sacrifice fly by Morales.

Everett blew the game open with a three-run fifth inning that saw Mariners first-round draft choice Kyle Lewis get his second triple of the season. The AquaSox plated two runs in the sixth before Lewis added a three-run home run in the seventh for the Frogs, who tallied 14 hits and came within one run of tying their season high.

Frogs starter Reggie McClain helped Everett get out in front by quieting the bats of the Northwest League’s South Division-leading Emeralds. McClain allowed just two hits and struck out five in four innings of work before Matthew Festa, Elliot Surrey and Thomas Burrows came on in relief. Festa (1-1) pitched 22⁄3 innings in relief to earn his first victory of the season.

Morales batted 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored, Lewis went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and was a double short of the cycle, Filia was 2-for-5 with three RBI, Nick Zammarelli went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Bryson Brigman (2-for-5) added three runs for Everett (11-9), which moved into sole possession of second place in the North Division and within a game of league-leading Tri-City.

Eugene (14-6) got its lone run of the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Trent Giambrone. Left fielder Chris Pieters led the Emeralds batting 2-for-4 to reach base for the 16th consecutive game.

The AquaSox and Emeralds continue their five-game series Thursday with Everett left-hander Jake Brentz (0-1, 2.81 earned-run average) scheduled to start against Emeralds lefty Jose Paulino (1-0, 0.56).
