Pitching uncertainty
All signs point to Gil Meche starting tonight’s game for the Mariners and, likely, Cha Seung Baek coming up from Class AAA Tacoma to start Wednesday night.
Officially, the Mariners’ entire rotation for the three-game series against the Yankees was TBA on Monday.
Meche, 9-8 with a 4.66 ERA, would stay in rotation if he pitches tonight.
Baek, who was held out of his scheduled start for the Rainiers on Sunday, is expected to take over the spot that opened when Jamie Moyer was traded to the Phillies. Moyer would have started Wednesday. Baek is 12-4 with a 3.00 ERA for the Rainiers.
Francisco Cruceta, 12-8 with a 4.21 ERA at Tacoma, also is a possibility, although he wouldn’t be available until Thursday because he pitched Saturday for the Rainiers.
If the M’s stay in rotation, Felix Hernandez (10-11, 4.50) would pitch Thursday.
The Yankees will pitch rookie right-hander Jeffrey Karstens, making his major league debut, today; right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (14-5, 3.86) on Wednesday; and left-hander Randy Johnson (14-9, 4.98) on Thursday.
