MUKILTEO — A field of 125 teams and approximately 2,000 players will gather this weekend for the annual Mukilteo Turkey Shoot soccer tournament, sponsored by the Mukilteo Youth Soccer Club.
The tournament for boys and girls recreational teams, U-8 to U-16, will be held tonight through Sunday at 13 fields in Mukilteo and Everett. Most of the teams are from Snohomish County, but there will also be teams from Seattle and other communities in King County.
“This is a pure recreational tournament to give these young kids the opportunity to play under the lights on a big field and to experience tournament ball,” said tournament director Kathy Bowyer. As recreational players, she added, “a lot of them don’t get to do that at this level. Usually tournaments like this are for the select and premier teams to use as warm-up to their seasons.”
Many of the recreational teams completed their schedules last weekend, she said, “and for a lot of them this is the only soccer tournament they play. So it’s a nice way to end their seasons.”
The tournament headquarters will be at Everett’s Kasch Park with three fields in use there. Fields will also be used at Mukilteo’s Mariner High School, Kamiak High School and Explorer Middle School, and at Everett High School.
The tournament, which has been around for over 30 years, “is a cool thing for these kids,” Bowyer said. “We give out lots of trophies, and I have 2,000 participation pins to give out, too.”
