Mukilteo’s Skerlong finishes second in Atlantic race

EDMONTON, Alberta — Rookie Jonathan Summerton became the fifth driver to win in five Atlantic Championship races this year, dominating in the second race of an Atlantic doubleheader at the Rexall Edmonton Indy.

Driving the No. 36 Newman Wachs Racing entry, the American got a great jump from his third-place starting position and took the lead from polesitter Carl Skerlong heading into the first turn. From there, Summerton led every lap en route to a 2.222-second victory over Skerlong.

Skerlong, driving the No. 14 Pacific Coast Motorsports entry, picked up his third top-three result in the past four Atlantic races with his second-place finish. The second-year driver from Mukilteo is still looking for his first victory in Atlantic competition.

As he also did in Friday’s first race of the doubleheader, Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe finished third. He took over the lead in the championship standings after five of 11 races. The Forsythe/Pettit Racing driver now leads Finnish rookie Markus Niemela, 118-113. Niemela, of Brooks Associates Racing, finished sixth in Saturday’s second race of the doubleheader after a second-place result on Friday.

American Jonathan Bomarito won Friday’s race and finished fourth on Saturday, while Dane Cameron was fifth on Saturday after a fourth-place run on Friday.
