MARYSVILLE — Josh Bartley scored both of Archbishop Murphy’s goals in the first half and Marysville Pilchuck came back to tie the game with two free kicks early in the second half as the matchup between the Wildcats and the Tomahawks ended in a 2-2 draw Tuesday night.
The matchup featured a coaching battle between brothers Mike Bartley of Archbishop Murphy and older brother Paul Bartley of Marysville Pilchuck. Despite being impressed with his nephew’s two goals — both hitting just inside the far post from the right side — the older Bartley explained that weather may have been a factor in the game’s final result.
“The wind was blowing at about 15-20 (mph) at any given time,” said Paul Bartley. “Basically whoever was facing the wind had a definite advantage.”
The Tomahawks took advantage of the inclimate weather after halftime, scoring on both free kicks. The first coming from Cesar Galvan in the 42nd minute and the second by Fabian Panduro in the 45th to tie the game at two goals apiece.
Despite the tie Bartley was impressed with not only his team’s play, but what he sees his brother’s team achieving later in the year.
“We aren’t a very tall team, but we move the ball really well. It’s interesting as many underclassmen as we started (tonight) how well we played,” Bartley said. “But Murphy … I definitely see them (making) state.”
