Murphy earns tie for first

MILL CREEK – Archbishop Murphy rode a second-quarter offensive explosion to a 58-54 victory over Coupeville Tuesday night.

The win over the Wolves, who are ranked fifth in the Associated Press poll, brings No. 10 Archbishop Murphy (9-1 in league, 16-4 overall) into a tie for first-place with Coupeville (9-1, 18-2) in the Northwest A League standings.

The tiebreaker will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at La Conner High School. The winner will gain a first-round bye in the tri-district tournament.

Trailing 18-14 going into the decisive second quarter, Archbishop Murphy turned up the heat by turning up the speed.

“We moved the ball around nicely and ran the court really well,” said Archbishop Murphy head coach Bill Kelley. “I think we tired them out a little bit.”

After wearing them down, Senior center Lauren Coate went to work. She dropped in 10 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter, and Trisha Terhar added seven. Also off the bench Mattie Johnson completed a 3-point play to help build Archbishop Murphy’s lead to 38-30 by halftime.

In the second-half, Coupeville began to chip away at the Archbishop Murphy lead, but two steals by Terhar in the last minute nullified any comeback attempts by Coupeville and all but sowed up the victory for the Wildcats.
