MUKILTEO — The Archbishop Murphy Wildcats have braved the storm of the Cascade Conference.
The Wildcats captured the league’s No. 1 seed into the 2A District 1 tournament and at least a tie for the conference crown with a 2-0 victory over Lakewood at Kasch Park Thursday night.
Archbishop Murphy (12-0 in league and 14-0 overall) played to a scoreless first half in a driving wind storm, according to first-year Wildcats coach Dick Henderson. Lindsey Bos tallied the game-winner 10 minutes into the second half to keep Archbishop Murphy perfect on the season.
“If you were on one side of the field it was very difficult to get it back to the other side of the field,” Henderson said. “I think we have some very talented offensive players that are making good decisions.”
Bos nailed the goal from 20 yards out into the top corner of the net off a Sarah Fortune through pass.
Maddy Huggins sealed off Lakewood’s hope of a comeback in the 74th minute on a 12-yard goal into the side netting off a Casey Gould pass.
Wildcats sophomore goalkeeper, Alexa Hughes, who has allowed just two goals on the season, posted her 11th shutout.
Henderson considers his team a very talented group for being a in a smaller classification.
“I think they played good or better than I hoped,” Henderson said of his expectations for the team before the season. “There is a lot of offensive talent on the team. Even though we are in a lower classification, with soccer you are likely to get very talented players from the select teams. We are very lucky to get a lot of talented players despite the size of our school.”
