Murphy, Lakewood remain undefeated

SULTAN – Archbishop Murphy remained on a collision course with Lakewood for the Cascade Conference title with a 42-14 victory over Sultan Friday.

Lakewood also won, defeating King’s 41-13, as both teams remained unbeaten at 8-0 overall. Archbishop Murphy has a non-league game next week at Nooksack Valley, While Lakewood plays Granite Falls. The two titans are scheduled to meet Thursday, Nov. 4 at Archbishop Murphy.

Stan Smith, who carried nine times for 175 yards, got the Wildcats off to a fast start against Sultan, returning an interception 28 yards for the game’s first touchdown. He went on to score two more times on offense on runs of 6 and 60 yards.

Sultan scored on a hook-and-ladder play. Quarterback Beau Champeux threw 9 yards to Shawn Walter, who pitched a lateral to Josh Mann, who completed an 81-yard touchdown play.

Archbishop Murphy amassed 437 yards rushing.

South Whidbey 29, Granite Falls 8: Michael Lodell, returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to spark South Whidbey to the Cascade Conference victory. Dane Guetlin rushed for 107 yards, including a TD run of 63 yards, for the Falcons. He also returned an interception 50 yards for a score. Kyle Nelson ran for 187 yards on 30 carries for Granite Falls and scored the Tigers’ lone touchdown on a 63-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Darrington 21, Coupeville 10: James Dolph led the Loggers to the Northwest 1A/B League victory, rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Darrington’s Stephan Diezig contributed 46 yards on four carries and closed out the scoring with a 21-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
