Murphy moves on to state

LYNDEN – Archbishop Murphy pitcher Brittany Allen struck out 10 of the 16 batters she faced to propel the Wildcats to a state berth and a place in the 2A District 1 softball championship game.

Murphy defeated Blaine 10-0 in the winner-to-state semifinal after advancing with a 9-2 first-round win over South Whidbey Thursday at Lynden High School.

Marya Oestreich (double), Kristin Ehlebracht (two RBI), Caitlin Perez and Makayla Sybrandt all batted 2-for-3 for the Wildcats, who face Burlington-Edison at 4 p.m. Saturday in the district title game. Kaitlin Duffy was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.

Archbishop Murphy 9, South Whidbey 2: At Lynden, Jaimee Greenup doubled and drove in four runs to lead Archbishop Murphy to a first-round win. Kaitlin Duffy batted 3-for-4 and Brittany Allen was 2-for-3 for the Wildcats. Samantha Pope and Rebecca Stratton were 2-for-3 for S. Whidbey.

Cedarcrest 2, Anacortes 1: At Lynden, Sarah Dowd singled and scored on a Rebecca Kent double in the eighth inning as the Red Wolves won their first-round game in the 2A District 1 playoffs. Pitcher Hillary Barker struck out 13 batters and allowed one unearned run. Sam Boelter tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Cedarcrest lost 16-0 to Burlington-Edison in the semifinals.

Shorecrest 1, Arlington 0: At Sedro-Woolley, Courtney Bryant singled and went to second on an overthrow, was sacrificed to third base and scored the game’s only run on a bunt by Molly Donahue. The Scots advanced to Saturday’s consolation final against Sedro-Woolley at 1 p.m. at Janicki Fields. Tbe winner of that game plays the Everett-Mt. Vernon loser for a state berth later Saturday.

Girls tennis

4A District 1 meet: At Stanwood, Top seeds Kelsey Mickels of Stanwood and Kari Fiske of Shorewood advanced to the singles final and earned state berths with semifinal victories.

In doubles, both No. 1 seeds were upset. Keena Hopkins and Lacy Thompson of Monroe, the No. 2 seed from the Wesco North, upset South No. 1 Christine Lee and Linda Cung 7-5, 7-5 in a winner-to-state semifinal. Meanwhile, North No. 3, Megan Amundson and Dani Fullwiler of Stanwood upset North No. 1 Amanda Iffrig and Anna Hendrich of Lake Stevens 6-2, 6-2 in the other semi.
