Murphy scores from midfield to notch key conference win

EVERETT – If they say that soccer matches are won or lost in the middle of the field, then Archbishop Murphy’s Aleigh Mansfield certainly proved it Thursday night, knocking home a long goal from midfield to shut out the South Whidbey Falcons 1-0 in a crucial Cascade Conference game at Kasch Park.

In the 58th minute of a scoreless game, Mansfield drove a long lofting kick towards the South Whidbey keeper, who bobbled the ball, but could not hold onto it.

“Lauren Jelinek saved the game for us,” Murphy coach Pat Jack said of the Wildcats keeper. “They’re a real good team, and attacked the goal often and got a lot of good shots off, but Lauren stopped everything that came her way.”

With the win, Murphy improved to 2-0-0 in league and 6-0-1 overall, and South Whidbey dropped to 2-1-0 in league, 7-1-0 overall.

The Wildcats play Steilacoom in a non-league match at 3 p.m. Saturday at Everett’s Lincoln Field. The Falcons host defending league champion Cedarcrest Saturday at 7 p.m.
