Murphy scores late to beat King’s

SHORELINE — Looking to avenge an 8-0 loss to defending 2A state champion Archbishop Murphy last month, the King’s girls soccer team hung with the Wildcats for 67 minutes Wednesday.

But Murphy scored three goals in the final 13 minutes of play to beat the Knights, who finished third in the 1A state playoffs last season.

“It was pretty close,” King’s coach Nicole Gabelein said. “It was a battle until halftime. We made some errors and they definitely capitalized on them … they’re a strong team.”

Aleigh Mansfield scored on an assist from Caroline Brawner to break up the 0-0 tie in the 67th minute. Melissa von der Hofen made it 2-0 three minutes later off an assist from Erin Ryan. Mansfield added another goal on a free kick in the 77th minute as the Wildcats put the game out of reach.

Despite the loss, King’s impressed Murphy coach Dick Henderson.

“They’re very aggressive, very physical and a hard team to score against,” Henderson said. “This is a good team that’s going to be difficult to play (later this season).”
