Murphy tops Sultan 3-0

EVERETT – The Archbishop Murphy girls soccer team may have played on an unusual day, but the results were the same.

The Wildcats scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory against Sultan Monday afternoon in a Cascade Conference contest at Kasch Park.

The Wildcats – who usually play on Tuesdays and Thursdays – were planning on meeting the Turks in the season-ender for both teams this Thursday, but the schedule was changed to support play-in games for the Class 2A District 1 playoffs that begin this weekend.

Both the Wildcats, who have clinched a district playoff berth, and Turks play league contests again today. Archbishop Murphy meets South Whidbey at 4 p.m. at Kasch Park and Sultan hosts Granite Falls at 6 p.m.

Melissa VonderHofen scored twice, putting the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the 16th minute off of an assist from Andrea Gaitan, and adding a goal in the 35th minute on a penalty kick.

Gaitan found the net in the 30th minute with help from Lindsey Bos to give Archbishop Murphy a 2-0 lead.

Wildcats goalkeepers Alexa Hughes, Julie Connelly and Sarah Carratt combined on the shutout.
