Murphy wins league title

EASTSOUND – Andy Hewitt scored two goals and Alex Ferris had two assists, leading Archbishop Murphy to a 7-0 victory over Orcas Island in its regular-season finale Thursday.

With the victory, the Wildcats clinched their second-straight Northwest A/B League Large School Division championship. Archbishop Murphy receives a first-round bye in the Tri-District Tournament.

“We’re very excited about winning the league again and having the opportunity to make it to state,” Wildcats coach Jon Echols said. “This team made it to state last year and lost in the quarterfinals, and with pretty much the whole team coming back, it was a good learning experience. I think we’re a more confident team and we’re really excited about the opportunity to go further than we have in the past.”

Luke Hagel, Chris Danford, Jonathan Jensen, John Feltner and Justin Ryan also scored for Archbishop Murphy. Alex Ungs and Brent McCann combined on the shutout in goal for the Wildcats, who will earn a spot at state should they win their opening district game on Nov. 8.
