FEDERAL WAY — Archbishiop Murphy’s Alec Barnard accomplished two firsts Saturday — one for himself and one for his school.
Barnard became the Wildcats’ first individual state champion in boys swimming when he won the 200-yard freestyle race in the 2A state meet at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. Barnard set a meet record with his time of 1 minute, 46.19 seconds.
“He connected when it mattered in today’s race,” Murphy head coach Mike McCloskey said. “He put everyone on the defense, and people didn’t know what he had left in the tank, but he just really put the hammer down on that third 50 (yards).
“He worked out a strategy to just go out hard from the gates,” McCloskey added. “You have to have faith in your conditioning to do that… I think he knew more of what he could do than I did.”
He was also third in the 100 butterfly and swam on Murphy’s fifth-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
Teammate RD Hunter, who was seventh in the 200 individual medley, also swam on the two relays, helping Archbishop Murphy finish sixth in the team standings.
Sehome won the state title.
