It’s become something of a habit for me to use Fridays for posting some sort of music video on the blog. For this week’s installment, how can I not be inspired by the Mariners’ incredible comeback last night? The above song tends to pop into my mind whenever I’m in a baseball sort of mood.
How crazy was last night’s comeback? Seattle trailed the San Diego Padres 12-2 before rallying to win 16-13. The comeback from the 10-run deficit was the largest in franchise history, eclipsing the eight-run comeback made in an 11-10 victory over the California Angels in April of 1996.
If you didn’t get a chance to see it, here’s the highlights of the comeback:

And as someone who’s filled out many a scorebook over the years, here’s what last night’s scorebook looked like:

Look at the players who were involved in the comeback. Stefen Romero? Shawn O’Malley? Dae-Ho Lee is a 33-year-old rookie from Korea who only made the team in the last week of spring training, and now he’s averaging a homer every 10.4 at bats, which would be the best rate in the majors if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.
The Mariners are 31-22 and tied with Texas for first place in the AL West. FanGraphs has the odds of the Mariners ending their 14-year playoff drought at 66.8 percent. There’s still a long way to go in the season, but this team sure has a different feel from the mostly uninspiring Mariners teams of the past decade. It’s going to be a heck of a ride.
