WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals have purchased the contract of infielder Alex Cintron from Triple-A Syracuse.
The move Saturday before Washington’s game against the Marlins filled a need for a backup infielder after shortstop Cristian Guzman was placed on the 15-day disabled list after Friday’s game with Florida retroactive to April 14. Guzman strained his left hamstring in Monday’s home opener while leaving the batter’s box.
Manager Manny Acta said he’ll continue to play Alberto Gonzalez at short. Gonzalez has started all three games since Guzman was injured.
Guzman was hitting a team-high .515 (17-for-33) with four RBIs as Washington’s leadoff batter.
Cintron was 9-for-18 in five games with Syracuse. He had signed a minor league deal in January.
