Former Grizzlies point guard critically wounded
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery.
A spokeswoman for Regional Medical Center in Memphis said Tuesday morning there was no change in the medical condition of Burks, who underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the lower torso.
Police said the 29-year-old was returned to the operating room about 10 p.m. Monday because of internal bleeding.
A police news release said Burks and four other men were in the backyard of a Memphis house when they were robbed by three men. They shot Burks and a 44-year-old man, whose identity was not released. Police said the second victim also was in critical condition.
Barnes agrees to 2-year deal
ORLANDO, Fla. — Well-traveled free-agent forward Matt Barnes has agreed to a two-year contract with the Orlando Magic. Barnes’ agent, Aaron Goodwin, who also represents Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard, confirmed the deal in an e-mail Monday, but declined to disclose financial terms. The Magic said they had nothing to announce yet. The 6-foot-7 Barnes averaged a career-high 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in 77 games last season for the Phoenix Suns. The Magic will be his seventh team in his seven NBA seasons. Barnes is the latest offseason acquisition for the Eastern Conference champions, who earlier added Vince Carter, power forward Brandon Bass and power forward Ryan Anderson.
76ers sign 1st-round pick
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have signed first-round draft pick, guard Jrue Holiday. Holiday, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, was the 17th overall pick in the draft and was an early-entry candidate out of UCLA following his freshman season. He averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in his only season with the Bruins. Holiday should expect to see instant playing time with the Sixers unlikely to re-sign starting point guard Andre Miller. Miller is an unrestricted free agent.
Raptors introduce Jack
TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors introduced Jarrett Jack on Tuesday after signing him to a $20 million deal over four years. The Raptors signed the restricted free agent to an offer sheet on July 13, giving the Indiana Pacers a week to match the offer. They opted not to, clearing the way for Jack to land in Toronto as general manager Bryan Colangelo remakes the Raptors’ roster. Toronto also acquired forward Hedo Turkoglu in a four-way deal and signed center Andrea Bargnani to a $50-million, five-year deal. Colangelo also picked Southern California swingman DeMar DeRosan with the ninth pick in last month’s draft.
Jack is one of just 11 NBA players who appeared in all 82 games in each of the past two seasons — last season with Indiana, where he supplanted former Raptors player T.J. Ford for the starter’s job, and the previous season in Portland.
May joins Kings
SACRAMENTO — Free-agent forward Sean May agreed in principle to a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, hoping for a fresh start for a career that has been derailed by injuries. The Kings announced the agreement Tuesday but did not disclose terms of the contract. May became a free agent when Charlotte declined to make him a one-year qualifying offer of $3.7 million last month. May had appeared in only 82 of a possible 328 games since being picked 13th in the 2005 draft because of a lingering knee injury and conditioning problems.
