Celtics’ Thibodeau to become Bulls coach, reports say
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Boston Celtics apparently will need a new assistant coach after the NBA finals.
Bulls.com and ESPNChicago.com both reported on Saturday that Tom Thibodeau had accepted a deal to replace Vinny Del Negro. Considered one of the NBA’s top defensive minds, Thibodeau was also a candidate for jobs in New Orleans and New Jersey.
However, Celtics coach Doc Rivers would not confirm reports that Thibodeau had accepted the Chicago Bulls’ head coaching job.
Rivers says Saturday that he “hopes it’s true,” and says Thibodeau deserves the job, but otherwise the Celtics were “focused on the NBA finals.”
What? Me worry?
MIAMI — Heat coach Erik Spoelstra says he’s not worried about his job, not even after team president and Hall of Fame coach Pat Riley recently raised the idea that he might one day return to the sideline.
Spoelstra said Saturday he’s been assured of his future by both Riley and Heat owner Micky Arison. Spoelstra, who has won 90 games in his two seasons as Miami’s coach, insisted “it’s been business as usual” as the team preps for free agency and the draft.
Seat policy upset Jazz fans
SALT LAKE CITY — A group of well-heeled Utah Jazz fans has sued the team’s corporate parent for more than $19 million in damages, claiming a new seating policy has caused their VIP seats to plummet in value.
Members of the Jazz 100 Club say their seat positions that once sold for as much as $200,000 now go for $20,000, a drop of 90 percent. The dispute stems from a January policy change allowing all season-ticket holders to also transfer ownership rights to their seats in EnergySolutions Arena. Previously, just 220 courtside seats that were held by the 50 to 60 club members could be sold or bequeathed, an exclusivity that increased their value.
