NBA NOTES: Hawks’ GM Knight to step down in July

Billy Knight says he’s leaving the Atlanta Hawks “in much better shape than it was in when I took over.”

Knight stuck to his slow, often painful plan to build with youth. The plan meant enduring repeated last-place finishes, but the Hawks showed steady if slow improvement and finally ended a nine-year playoff drought this season.

Knight announced Wednesday he’s stepping down July 1 as general manager after six years in Atlanta.

Michael Gearon Jr. said Knight’s resignation does not affect any decision to be made with coach Mike Woodson.

ROCKETS: Houston guard Tracy McGrady could need three months to recover following operations on his knee and shoulder.

“I don’t expect these issues to impact his ability to prepare for the upcoming season,” said team physician Tom Clanton, who operated on McGrady’s knee.

Loose tissue was cleared out of the left knee and left shoulder.

NETS: New Jersey forward Richard Jefferson was charged with assault for grabbing another man by the throat in a Minneapolis club earlier this year.

Jefferson was in town with team on Jan. 27 when, according to a charge filed, he went to a club in the Graves Hotel where the victim was having a private birthday party in a roped-off section.

The documents say Jefferson entered the area and got angry when he was asked to leave. He is accused of grabbing the victim, shoving him to a bench and choking him with both hands.

HAWKS: Atlanta forward Marvin Williams was suspended one game without pay for committing a flagrant foul, penalty two in the Hawks’ Game 7 loss in Boston.

Williams, who will serve the suspension in his first game next season, knocked Boston’s Rajon Rondo to the floor with 9:09 left in the third period of the Celtics’ 99-65 victory on Sunday.

WIZARDS: Gilbert Arenas insists he won’t return to the Washington Wizards if forward Antawn Jamison isn’t re-signed by the team.

“If he doesn’t come back, I’m not coming back,” Arenas said in a posting on his blog, a rambling entry of more than 2,800 words.

Arenas, a three-time All-Star who missed most of this season after two operations on his left knee, can opt out of his contract. He has said since before the season that he planned to do that so he could stay with Washington for more money.

NUGGETS: Denver All-Star Carmelo Anthony has been ticketed for speeding, three weeks after he was cited on a charge of driving under the influence.

Police say Anthony was pulled over Saturday for driving 60 mph in a 45-mph zone.

The 23-year-old was arrested on a DUI charge in Denver on April 14. He apologized the next day.

PACERS: Indiana promoted David Morway to general manager. Morway, who had been senior vice president of basketball operations, will oversee salary cap issues and help president of basketball operations Larry Bird with all personnel decisions. He adds that to his previous duties of overseeing the day-to-day operation and administration of the basketball division.
