The Mariners’ 2009 TV commercials are out, and while my sense of humor may be a little more twisted than most, the current batch seems good for a few chuckles and not much more.
There’s the one featuring manager Don Wakamatsu and his “well-rounded” life. Or the one where Ichiro Suzuki wears out the pitching machine at Safeco Field. Or the confusion over Ryan Rowland-Smith’s native country. Or Felix Hernandez showing his soft side after throwing his hard stuff. Or the 100th shot since this campaign began in 1994, featuring Jay Buhner and Edgar Martrinez revealing the true creative force behind all the commercials.
My favorite among the five shown on the Mariners’ web site? It”s a tie between Wakamatsu being a 24/7 baseball man and Hernandez sending flowers to all the hitters he’d struck out in a game.
