New Washington State Coaches Association volleyball rankings

Several local teams have shuffled in and out of the Class 4A state volleyball rankings this year, including Monroe, Edmonds-Woodway and Jackson.

This week much-improved Jackson, which won just four matches in the entire 2008 season, is the only area squad in the 4A top 10. The Timberwolves (6-1) are No. 10.

But Jackson’s stay in the rankings is in question now because on Monday the T-wolves lost a back-and-forth Wesco South match against Shorecrest (3-4 overall). The Scots won 3-2 by game scores of 11-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14.

Still, Jackson is enjoying quite a turnaround from last year, when it was 3-6 in division matches and 4-10 overall. Asked to explain his team’s success, Jackson volleyball coach Erik Champoux wrote this in an e-mail:

“(We) only had 4 wins last year and 6 matches that we lost, we lost by a total of 15 points. We could have easily had a 10 win season instead of 4.

So I set up a ton of open gyms over the summer which in included training with Maximum Sport Conditioning (owned by Daniel Jahn, former trainer of the UW volleyball team) and we worked our butts off. 4 hours a session, twice a week. We also held our team camp at Jackson (with Gold Medal Squared, a coaching company that has done a lot of schools in our area) this year so we could get more girls to come and that worked well also.

I have told everyone I’ve talked to that’s it been the work ethic of the girls that has made us successful. They’ve put the time into learning my systems and understanding the philosophies. I’m very proud of everyone.”

Senior middle blocker Christy Cain has made a big impact, and so has standout newcomer Haley MacDonald, a talented freshman setter. Cain, who is 6-foot-5, wants to play in college and is interested in Northwest University in Kirkland, said Champoux.
