CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR has docked Ryan Newman 15 points because his car failed a post-race inspection at Darlington Raceway. The penalty is a severe hit to Newman’s championship chances.
Newman was seven points out of the final qualifying spot for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. The penalty drops him 22 points behind Jamie McMurray in the battle for the last spot as NASCAR heads into Saturday night’s regular-season finale.
In addition to the points deduction, crew chief Luke Lambert was fined $25,000.
NASCAR on Wednesday also docked 15 points from Kyle Larson, but he’s already qualified for the chase. Chad Johnston, his crew chief, was fined $22,500 because the car failed post-race inspection.
