After guiding his surging squad to one of its biggest victories of the season, Mark Perry received an equally impressive honor.
Perry, head coach of the Snohomish High School football team, was one of two Week 8 NFL High School Coach of the Week award winners for the state of Washington. He coached Snohomish to a 45-21 victory Friday at Lake Stevens. With the triumph, the Panthers (7-1 overall) clinched their first postseason berth since 2003.
According to a press release, the state’s NFL High School Coach of the Week honorees are selected by members of the Washington State Football Coaches Association. Winners get a $500 donation for their football program from the Seattle Seahawks and a $100 savings bond from Sterling Savings Bank.
Perry’s team received other good news this week. Snohomish moved into the top 10 in the WashingtonPreps.com Class 4A rankings. The Panthers, previously unranked, are No. 9 in the new poll. They complete their regular season schedule tomorrow against Monroe (0-8) at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The state’s other NFL High School Coach of the Week winner also has local ties: Jay Mills, head football coach at Ephrata High, was honored after his team blasted Quincy 63-0. Mills is a Marysville-Pilchuck High graduate. Ephrata, which competes in 2A, is located about 25 minutes northwest of Moses Lake.
