BILLS: First-round pick Leodis McKelvin signed a five-year contract potentially worth $19.4 million with Buffalo and the cornerback is set to join the team after missing just two days of training camp. Selected 11th overall out of Troy University, McKelvin was the first defensive back selected in the draft, and will compete with Jabari Greer for a starting job opposite Terrence McGee this season.
COLTS: Peyton Manning still hasn’t made it to training camp. The two-time league MVP missed his second straight day of Colts practice Saturday as he continues to recover from knee surgery at his Indianapolis-area home. He had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee July 14 and doctors have instructed him to stay home to avoid risking another infection.
JETS: Danny Woodhead’s NFL dream will have to wait. The NCAA’s career rushing leader injured his left knee while practicing in training camp with the New York Jets on Friday, and the team placed him on the waived-injured list the next day. The exact nature and severity of the injury wasn’t immediately known.
CHIEFS: After a brief contract holdout that essentially cost him only one practice, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey signed a five-year, $51 million deal that includes an option year and more than $22 million in guaranteed money. The 300-pound All-American from LSU was the fifth player taken overall last April.
PANTHERS: Carolina signed running back Jonathan Stewart to a five-year deal that includes $10.8 million in guaranteed money, putting all their draft picks under contract before the team’s first training camp practice. Stewart came to terms on the deal that could be worth up to $20 million hours after fellow first-round pick Jeff Otah signed his contract late Friday. Both players were on the field for the team’s opening practice Saturday morning. Stewart, the 13th overall pick out of Oregon, is expected to compete for the starting running back job with last year’s backup, DeAngelo Williams. The Panthers released last year’s starter, DeShaun Foster, after struggling to get a consistent running game last season.
SAINTS: New Orleans running back Deuce McAllister sat out a practice because he had fluid drained from his surgically repaired left knee, then the Saints sent him for a precautionary MRI. McAllister said later in the afternoon that everything appeared to be fine.
“Everything looks good in there,” McAllister said in a text message to The Associated Press. “They just wanted to make sure.”
JAGUARS: Jacksonville placed former University of Washington receiver Reggie Williams and four others on the physically unable to perform list. Receiver Jerry Porter (hamstring), Jeremy Mincey (wrist), safety Chad Nkang (wrist) and tight end George Wrighster (knee) also were placed on the PUP list. The five players can be activated at any time during training camp, but putting them on the list protects the Jaguars from being on the hook for their entire salaries if the injuries prevent them from making the final roster.
COWBOYS: Dallas came to terms on five-year deals late Friday night with both of its first-round picks: Felix Jones, a running back from Arkansas, and cornerback Mike Jenkins from South Florida. Jones was the 22nd overall pick in April. He is expected to complement Marion Barber with the Cowboys much as he did in college with Darren McFadden. Jenkins, the 28th overall pick, is expected to compete for playing time at cornerback, where the Cowboys already have Anthony Henry, Terence Newman and Adam Jones.
PATRIOTS: New England signed veteran running back LaMont Jordan a day after he was released by the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders released Jordan on Friday after being unable to trade him. Jordan has rushed for 3,285 yards and 24 touchdowns in seven seasons with Oakland and the New York Jets.
EAGLES: Philadelphia cornerback Asante Samuel left Saturday morning’s practice with a strained hamstring. Coach Andy Reid said Samuel, who did not practice in the afternoon, will probably have an MRI today.
BRONCOS: Denver wide receiver Taylor Jacobs re-signed with the Broncos after tight end Edell Shepherd injured his knee. Shepherd, a fifth-year player who joined the Broncos as a free agent in March, blew out his left knee on the first day of workouts Friday. He was placed on the team’s reserve/injured list.
REDSKINS: Washington defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery broke a bone in his right hand. Redskins coach Jim Zorn says the team does not know how long Montgomery would be out. Montgomery started 15 games last season with 47 tackles.
