New York is interested in luring Michael Strahan out of retirement after losing Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury Saturday night. The Super Bowl champions contacted the representative for the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end to gauge Strahan’s interest in returning for a 16th season.
Strahan turned down a $6 million contract offer in the offseason. He then signed with Fox Sports to work on its NFL pregame show. With Strahan’s status uncertain, the Giants shuffled their defense Monday and moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to end from his strongside linebacker spot.
DOLPHINS: Miami coach Tony Sparano named Chad Pennington the team’s starting quarterback. Pennington was recognized as the starter when he signed with Miami. The 32-year-old separated himself from Miami’s other quarterbacks — Henne, Josh McCown and John Beck — and has led the Dolphins to consecutive preseason wins in convincing fashion. He is 16-for-21 for 149 yards and one touchdown.
CHIEFS: Kansas City signed free agent kicker Jay Feely to a one-year contract. Feely will join Connor Barth and Nick Novak in what coach Herm Edwards called a “kick-off,” and one of the three will be released before Thursday night’s preseason finale against St. Louis.
COLTS: Peyton Manning might be activated by the Indianapolis Colts today, although the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player is not expected to play in the team’s final preseason game Thursday night. Manning underwent surgery July 14 to have an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee and has been on the physically unable to perform list the entire preseason. He has never missed a regular-season start in his 10-year career.
TEXANS: Receiver Harry Williams probably won’t play football again after injuring his neck and spine in a preseason game. Dr. Walter Lowe said Williams is expected to walk again after surgery Sunday to fuse and stabilize the cervical spine levels C-2 through C-4, but the severity of the injury makes it “highly unlikely that Harry will return to football.” The 26-year-old Williams was hurt in a collision with a teammate while trying to make a tackle on a kick return in the first quarter of Friday’s game.
CLEVELAND: Quarterback Derek Anderson wasn’t cleared to return to practice, so Brady Quinn likely will start his second straight game Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears. Anderson suffered a concussion Aug. 18 when he was sacked by New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and his helmet banged off the Giants Stadium turf. He hasn’t practiced or talked to the media since. Coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that Anderson hasn’t passed tests designed to determine whether he’s returned to normal brain function.
