Kyle Orton will start as the Chicago Bears opening day quarterback — beating Rex Grossman in a competition that lasted through training camp and two preseason games.
The Bears open the regular season on Sept. 7 against the Indianapolis Colts.
Orton started 15 games in 2005 and three last season. He’s thrown for more than 2,300 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career.
FALCONS: Matt Ryan’s next shot at winning the starting quarterback job for Atlanta will come in his first preseason start.
Falcons coach Mike Smith said that Ryan will start Friday night’s game against Tennessee at the Georgia Dome.
DOLPHINS: Miami released offensive lineman Steve McKinney, three months after he signed as a free agent.
McKinney had been competing for playing time at guard and as a backup to center Samson Satele.
RAVENS: Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs reported to the team and began practicing after signing his $8.47 million, one-year tender.
On the advice of his agent, the Ravens’ franchise player skipped training camp to protest the franchise tag. He’s expected to play about 15 snaps against the St. Louis Rams in the team’s third preseason game on Saturday night.
“It was the business side of it. I really didn’t want to do it because I love football and running around,” Suggs said. “It was really no big deal.”
SAINTS: New Orleans signed former Pro Bowl safety Lance Schulters. The 33-year-old Schulters joined the squad, making New Orleans the latest stop in a career that has included stints with San Francisco, Tennessee, Atlanta and Miami.
