As expected, the league reinstated 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith now that he has served his nine-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies.
Smith is free to rejoin his teammates at practice after spending the past two-plus months working out by himself at the team’s facility. He also was permitted to attend team meetings.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that he wasn’t prepared to say whether Smith will play Sunday against the New York Giants.
The 49ers received a one-week roster exemption for Smith so that he has time to get reacclimated. Once he gets activated by the 49ers, a player will have to be released from the 53-man roster.
