Paul Maurice was fired as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs after his team failed to make the playoffs during his two seasons.
Maurice, who has one year left on his contract, was informed of the decision Wednesday morning.
The Maple Leafs finished 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 36-35-11 record and missed a playoff spot by 11 points.
Maurice was also fired as coach of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2003. He said the second time is slightly easier to take.
LIGHTNING: Tampa Bay center Jeff Halpern ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the world hockey championships and is expected to be sidelined until late December or early January.
Halpern also sprained the medial collateral ligament and suffered a small tear to the lateral meniscus.
Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said doctors recommended Halpern wait 4 to 6 weeks to allow the MCL to heal.
