Nickelson wins two races for L. Stevens in Wesco meet

EVERETT — A few hours before signing a letter of intent to attend Eastern Washington University, Amber Nickelson proceeded to win the 1,600- and 800-meter races for Lake Stevens in its Western Conference victory Thursday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The Vikings, who won with 130 points, defeated Stanwood (85), Everett (37) and Oak Harbor (25).

"She (Nickelson) had a very good meet," Lake Stevens coach Jeff Page said. "Right about now, she’s signing a letter of intent to attend Eastern on a full ride."

A cross-country state champion in 2002, Nickelson helped the Vikings win 11 of 18 events.

"We had a pretty good performance overall," Page said. "I am very pleased. Anytime you win 11 events you know you got a solid performance from everyone."

Jessica Hinton, who finished second behind Everett’s Cori Moore in the 200, won the 100 for the Vikings.

"Jessica led the whole way in the 200," Page said. "But Cori ran down one of the best sprinters in the county in Jessica. It was a heck of a race."

Taryan Adams also contributed to Lake Stevens effort, winning the 300 hurdles.
