BRAVES: Tom Glavine went back on the Atlanta Braves’ disabled list, a day after the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was hit hard in his first start since June 10.
Trying to overcome an elbow injury, Glavine gave up seven runs, seven hits and four walks in an 11-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. The 42-year-old, who has a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, has been hoping to avoid surgery. He experienced more discomfort on the mound.
CARDINALS: Right-hander Chris Carpenter was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the St. Louis Cardinals because of a strained pitching shoulder, joining right-hander Adam Wainwright and left-hander Mark Mulder on the sideline.
Carpenter had reconstructive elbow surgery in July 2007 and made three big league starts before the latest problem developed. Carpenter felt pain in the shoulder while throwing a fastball last Sunday during his start against the Chicago Cubs. An MRI on Tuesday detected a strain.
METS: Injured New York Mets closer Billy Wagner is to throw a simulated game this weekend and will be activated when he’s eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday. Wagner, out with a strained left forearm, pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two batters in a rehab assignment for Class AA Binghamton on Thursday.
There were plans for Wagner to pitch a second game for Class-A Brooklyn, but Manuel said Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen wanted to see the left-hander pitch today.
