LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Josh Heytvelt had 22 points and No. 9 Gonzaga beat Maryland 81-59 on Friday in the semifinals of the Old Spice Classic.
Gonzaga (4-0) opened an 18-point lead midway through the second half on the play of subs Robert Sacre and Steven Gray and pulled away for the win.
Greivis Vasquez had 16 points for Maryland (4-1), which upset No. 5 Michigan State in the first round. No other Terrapin finished in double figures.
Gonzaga finished a close first half with a 10-2 run to take a 38-29 halftime lead.
Maryland shot only 38 percent and made one of 13 3-pointers.
The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament championship Sunday against Tennessee, a 90-78 winner over Georgetown in the other semi.
Maryland will play the Hoyas for third place.
Landon Milbourne opened the second half with a reverse layup to cut Gonzaga’s lead to seven but the Bulldogs scored 19 of the next 28 points. Matt Bouldin’s two free throws with just over 10 minutes left put Gonzaga ahead 57-40.
The Terps’ 3-point shooting, which carried them to their win over Michigan State, deserted them against the Bulldogs. Maryland made nine of 19 3s against the Spartans.
The Terrapins went the final 6 minutes of the first half without a field goal, and trailed 38-29 at the break.
Vasquez made a 3 early in the game to become the 47th Maryland player to reach 1,000 career points.
The Terrapins were shooting for their second win over a ranked nonconference opponent since 2003. Their first was Thursday against Michigan State.
