No holding back as Stanwood wins showdown

STANWOOD – The Stanwood Spartans weren’t afraid to show their hand in a preseason showdown against Western Conference North Division powerhouse Cascade.

With both teams entering Tuesday’s battle undefeated, the Spartans escaped unscathed, winning three of four sets 15-5, 15-9, 9-14, 16-14 to claim the 3-1 victory.

Stanwood improved to 6-0 overall, while Cascaded slid to 5-1. League play opens Thursday.

“We didn’t hold anything back, we played our hand,” Stanwood coach Keri Von Moos said. “We wanted to hit hard and pass well. I am pleased with our play.”

Jenna Von Moos led the charge with 32 assists. She served perfectly, going 27-for-27 with a pair of aces. Junior Lindsey Signer contributed 20 kills.

“Cascade is a tough team,” Von Moos said. “They stayed tough with us all night. We expected a tough match.”

Stanwood opened strong with a dominating 15-5 first-set victory, a quick-attacking trademark the Spartans are becoming known for this season, according to Von Moos.

Von Moos said a mental lapse in the third set allowed the Bruins to battle back with a 14-9 victory. Danielle Selvidge led Cascade with 12 kills while teammate Alyssa Smoke added 18 assists. Stanwood proved too powerful, taking the fourth match, 16-14.

Oak Harbor 3, Mariner 0: At Oak Harbor H.S., Valerie Hartman had 23 assists and teammate Amber Young served seven aces in leading Oak Harbor (3-3 overall) to a 15-2, 16-14, 15-7 non-conference victory. Mariner (1-3) was led by Melissa Kessell and Tierra Campbell who combined for 12 kills.

Lake Stevens 3, Arlington 0: At Lake Stevens H.S., Deanna Cooper had 18 kills and Erin Sherard had 30 assists for Lake Stevens (1-5 overall) in the 15-12, 15-10, 15-13 non-conference victory. Arlington fell to 0-6.

Snohomish 3, Monroe 0: At Snohomish H.S., the Panthers (5-0 overall) rode Erin Stetcher’s 18 assists and the eight kills and three stuff blocks of Annie Hots to a 16-14, 15-3, 15-7 non-conference victory. Katie Habich led Monroe (0-6) with 11 assists and Taylor Thompson with four kills.

Marysville-Pilchuck 3, Meridian 1: At Meridian H.S., Mariko Coverdale recorded 13 kills and had eight blocks as M-P (5-0 overall) won three of four games 15-12, 2-15, 15-3, 15-11 over Meridian (6-1).

Lakewood 3, Sultan 0: At Lakewood H.S., Shannon Cook and Alex Sawyer registered four kills each to boost the Cougars (2-4 overall) to the 15-1, 15-8, 15-8 non-conference victory over Sultan (0-4).

Granite Falls 3, South Whidbey 2: At Granite Falls H.S., Ashley Quinn recorded 31 assists and teammate Denise Wilbur contributed 24 kills and eight blocks for Granite Falls (4-2 overall) in an 18-16, 13-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-3 non-conference win. South Whidbey fell to 2-2.

Mount Baker 3, Blaine 1: At Mount Baker H.S., Jen Flannery had 17 digs to lead Mount Baker (1-5 overall) to the non-league win. Alicia Dickinson served 15-for-15 with a match-winning ace and Mount Baker had 31 kills in the 19-17, 15-1, 9-15, 15-10 victory.

Coupeville 3, Friday Harbor 0: At Coupeville H.S., Amy Mouw recorded 10 kills as Coupeville improved to 1-0 in league and 2-1 overall with the 15-7, 15-9, 15-3 Northwest A League win. Friday Harbor dropped to 0-1, 0-1.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Concrete 1: At Archbishop Murphy H.S., Molly Reynolds was 15-for-16 serving with four aces and four assists as the Wildcats (1-0 in league, 1-3 overall) claimed a 15-2, 15-7, 8-15, 15-0 Northwest A League victory over Concrete (0-1, 0-2). Lauren Coate and Kristen Linscott combined for 12 aces, 10 kills and five blocks for Archbishop Murphy.

Darrington 3, Skykomish 0: At Darrington H.S., Darrington swept Skykomish 15-1, 15-3, 16-14 to improve to 2-1 in the Northwest B League and 5-1 overall. Skykomish dropped to 0-2, 1-2.

Cedar Park Christian 3, Puget Sound Adventist 1: At Puget Sound Adventist, Ashleigh Salios had eight kills, seven assists, five aces and four digs to lead Cedar Park Christian (2-0 in league, 3-1 overall) 15-1, 15-5, 11-15, 15-10 Sea-Tac B victory.

Snohomish County Christian 3, Bear Creek 1: At Bear Creek H.S., Gwen Oakland was 7-for-7 from the service line as Snohomish County Christian won the Emerald City League match 15-3, 9-15, 15-9, 15-3.

Master’s Touch 2, Lopez 0: Brit Litwin and Matt Elmore scored goals to lead Master’s Touch to the Northwest A/B League victory.

Archbishop Murphy 10, La Conner 0: David Wilcox scored two goals and assisted on another in Archbishop Murphy’s Northwest A/B League win.
