SHORELINE – The Seagulls had been waiting for this one.
One year after missing out on a Western Conference South Division championship by just 3.5 points, the Everett High School boys track team had redemption on its mind. They got it big time this week, as thrower Jake Stevens won three events and Everett piled up a meet-best 204 points in the Wesco South Championships at Shoreline Stadium. Lynnwood finished a distant second with 102 points, followed by Shorecrest (91.5) and Kamiak (82.5).
So how important is the team title? Everett athletes have the letters “WDS” on their shirts. “S” is for state, “D” is for districts and “W” is for Wesco South. Now it’s one down, two to go.
“This whole season, Wesco’s kind of been the goal,” said Everett’s Niko Sievers, who came from behind Friday to win the 110-meter hurdles in 15.20 seconds. Sievers fell behind early leader Kevin Myhre of Meadowdale (15.28) before out-dueling his friend for the victory.
“I didn’t think I was going to get him,” Sievers said. “It was a fun race.”
Sievers cruised to a comfortable victory in the 300 hurdles in 39.89.
Stevens gave Everett an enormous boost despite a lingering right groin injury. He won the javelin with a throw of 174 feet, 5 inches and his discus toss of 171-11 was also tops. Stevens won the shot put (54-10) in Wednesday’s final.
Everett scored a combined 30 points with an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, which was also held Wednesday. The sweep by Taylor Vance (first, 14-7), Mat Jelley (second, 14-0) and Seth Cordell (third, 12-6) “was pretty cool,” Everett coach Doug Hall said. Hall credited new Everett pole vault coach Mike Mikos with molding the trio before the excellent performance.
