Everett Silvertips head coach Kevin Constantine seems to enjoy other sports almost as much as hockey. He’s referenced “Moneyball” in the past and Tuesday he mentioned the Vince Lombardi-led Green Bay Packers in reference to how the Tips try to focus more on what they do well than who their opponent is.
“We have to stay focused on the things we do well,” Constantine said. “It’s no different than the Green Bay sweep of the 60s when Vince Lombardi was the coach. The whole world knew it was going to be a sweep most plays. Green Bay’s theory is ‘We’re going to do this play better than you’re going to be able to defend it.’ That’s a huge chunk of sports philosophy is you’ve got to the things that you do well and that’s going to be the foundation and core of what you do.”
Spokane is Everett’s next opponent, and the Silvertips were on the ice early today and off just after noon as they hit the road. The Chiefs are coached by the legendary Don Nachbaur, who is third-winningest coach in WHL history and the only coach to win the WHL Coach of the Year award with three franchises. Wednesday is the first of a home-and-home series this week that returns to Xfinity Arena Friday. The Tips take on Swift Current at home Saturday before embarking on their first of two Alberta road trips this season that will consume all of next week.
Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart and defenseman Noah Juulsen are scheduled to rejoin the team Wednesday after spending Monday and Tuesday competing for Team WHL in the Canada-Russia Series. Below you can find gifs of the goal scored by Juulsen in Monday’s 7-3 win over Russia.
