Not a ton of news today from Pete Carroll, and really when it comes to these Monday press conference, no news is generally good news considering the usual big topic on Mondays is injuries.
Along those lines, Pete Carroll did say that tight end Cameron Morrah has a sore knee, but didn’t get into the details about what that might mean for this week or beyond.
“Cameron Morrah has a sore knee today,” Carroll said. “We don’t know what that’s going to mean, but we’ll see.”
As for Tarvaris Jackson, the quarterback got through the game fine and it sounds like, barring a setback this week, he’ll be back as the starter in Dallas next week.
“Tarvaris made it through, came out pretty good,” he said. “We’ll see how he responds and throws during the week.
“He feels OK, he feels better than he did last week at this time so that’s a really positive sign… We’ll see how the week goes, but we’ll try to get him ready. He’s definitely, in my mind, starting unless he can’t at this point.”
Carroll praised the play of his defense, and added that the offense, to get where they want it, needs to be better in the run game: “We’ve got to balance out what’s going on on offense… We’re going to focus real hard on getting that done, see if we can generate the type of balance that gives you a chance to have a real good attack. Right now we’re leaning on the throwing game. We threw a lot of yards at them, but it wasn’t in the manner that we wanted. “
The other big topic today was penalties. Seattle had 11 for 80 yards yesterday, including several that kept drives going for the Bengals, and others that led to Seattle drives stalling out. According to Stats, LLC, the Seahawks have been penalized 60 times for 433 yards, fourth most in the league behind Oakland, Carolina and Detroit, all of whom have played one more game than the Seahawks.
“The first drive, we messed it up with a couple of penalties and gave them a chance to get on the board.… The 5-yard penalties are the ones that are driving me crazy. Those are the ones that are totally in our control, that you can just wash out of your game. You don’t have to have those be a factor at all. We had four false starts in this game. I keep attributing it to the newness and all of that, but this needs to go away. I made a big deal about it today, it needs to go away, we need to get rid of this.”
Then there’s a whole different level of penalties like the 15-yarder called on cornerback Brandon Browner after he body slammed Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson. Carroll said he had no good explanation for that play, though he obviously wasn’t happy about it.
“That’s crazy,” he said. “That was a crazy play for him to do that… That was uncalled for. He has no explanation, he just did it.”
