Oak Harbor beats jitters

OAK HARBOR – It could be called a tale of two halves.

After coming out tight in the first half, the Oak Harbor girls basketball team roared to life in the second half to come from behind and defeat the Snohomish Panthers 53-40 in a Western Conference North game Friday night.

The victory gives the Wildcats sole possession of first place and keeps intact their undefeated record. Snohomish (3-1 in league, 5-1 overall), meanwhile, dropped into a second-place tie with Monroe with the loss.

Missing head coach Dwight Lindstrom, due to a scheduled absence, the Wildcats opened the game out of sync with each other, leading to numerous missed lay-ins and errant passes. But, even after all the mistakes, Oak Harbor found itself only behind by seven at halftime.

“I told our girls that we’re usually down by 20 or 30 by this point so they felt we had a good chance to come back,” said assistant coach Warren Quinn. “(At halftime) nobody got down on each other and everybody picked one another up.”

In the third quarter, Oak Harbor picked apart Snohomish with intense, full-court pressure. Offensively Heidi McNeill scored all of her eight points in the quarter leading to a one-point advantage for the Wildcats going into the final quarter.

Eyeing the finish line, the Wildcats refused to let up. More defensive pressure and the sweet shooting of Kaylea Kingma helped the Wildcats to outscore Snohomish 17-5 in the fourth quarter wrapping up the big win.
