MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Teams generally use the first game of the season to gauge where they’re at and see what they can fine tune before getting too far into the season.
This was the case for Mountlake Terrace and Oak Harbor as both teams walked away eager to improve on their performances after the Wildcats defeated the Hawks 60-24 in a non-conference game at Mountlake Terrace High School.
“Our chemistry’s really good,” Oak Harbor head coach Brett McLeod said. “This is one of the best teams in the way they get along. It’s been a good start.”
Jessica Denmon got off to an excellent start for Oak Harbor, finishing the game with 24 points and three 3-point field goals.
“Denmon was hitting from the outside,” David Brophy, the Mountlake Terrace coach, said.
Jen Jansen had 11 points and Cori Henricksen added 10 for the Wildcats.
After leading 24-16 at halftime, Oak Harbor (1-0) outscored the Hawks 21-5 in the third quarter to pull away.
“The third quarter was the difference,” McLeod said.
“They played good defense and shot the lights out on us,” Brophy said. “I think we got good shots, we just weren’t hitting the basket. They made us work hard.”
Junior guard Corrine Pingul led Mountlake Terrace (0-1) with 10 points. Brophy also highlighted sophomore Mindy James (seven points) saying she “provided a little boost off the bench.”
Both teams now turn their focus forward and hope to improve on this game in what looks to be two very difficult leagues.
“There’s definitely some areas for improvement,” McLeod said. “(But) I kinda like where we’re hopefully headed.”
