Oak Harbor keeps hope alive

MONROE – The Oak Harbor boys basketball team kept its postseason hopes alive on Tuesday with a 71-53 victory over Monroe in a Western Conference North game at the Monroe gym.

Marc Ferguson scored 16 points and Jeremy Brown netted 14 for the Wildcats, who finished the regular season 7-9 in league and 8-12 overall.

Oak Harbor’s last chance for the fifth and final playoff berth hinges on a Marysville-Pilchuck loss on Thursday. The Tommies can clinch the final berth with a victory over Lake Stevens. An M-P loss will force a tiebreaker game with Oak Harbor.

The Wildcats blew open the game in the second quarter with a 20-9 run to take a 36-21 lead. Kyle Saar scored five of his seven points during the Wildcat run and Ferguson scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half.

“That second quarter hurt us,” Monroe coach Brett Wille said. “We went from being eight down to 15. Kyle (Saar) hit a 3-pointer and then scored again. We couldn’t get any closer after that.”

Senior Chris Raimundi contributed 13 points and teammate John Lobbestael chipped in 12 points to round out Oak Harbor’s top scorers.

“We hung in there, but they kept making their shots down the stretch,” Wille said. “Their transition game was very good, that also hurt us.”

Eric Hammerquist scored 15 points and Tyler Marley scored 11 to lead the Bearcats (4-11, 6-13).
