Oak Harbor opens new stadium with win

OAK HARBOR – The 2006 defending 4A state champion Oak Harbor Wildcats opened their new stadium in dominating fashion Friday, as they defeated Arlington 35-0 in front of a huge home crowd.

“It was standing room only,” Oak Harbor head coach Dave Ward said. “There was no seating in here it was amazing.”

The first quarter was scoreless. Ward described his players as “wide-eyed” by the new stadium and the size of the big crowd.

However, Oak Harbor soon found its offensive rhythm, as quarterback Johnny Encinas found Rodrick Rumble for a pair of 6-yard touchdown passes to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Encinas had touchdown passes of 15 and 6 yards to Michael Bell in the third quarter as Oak Harbor continued to display its passing prowess. Encinas found Rumble one final time in the fourth quarter for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

“We were able to throw the ball (tonight),” Ward said. “Arlington played to the run really well and took us out of our running game.”

Encinas, who replaced 2006 4A Associated Press player of the year Marshall Lobbestael now at Washington State as the starting QB this season, finished 17-of-26 passing for 195 yards and five touchdowns. Rumble had six receptions for 73 yards and Bell had six for 81 yards.
